May Gray and June Gloom be damned, Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching, which means summer has unofficially begun. We understand that holiday weekends usually mean recharging and laying flat on the couch for you, but if you want to get out of the house, it’s the events in Los Angeles that we’re most excited about.
EVENTS
STAY LATE AT THE NIGHT MARKET
This Saturday, May 28, Mama LA, a community non-profit organization, is hosting a night market in honor of AAPI Heritage Month. The 21+ event will take place from 6:00 pm to 2:00 am at The Berrics in East Los Angeles and will feature over 20 different food vendors, from Holy Basil to Bhanu Indian Cuisine, as well as DJs, live music and much more. Tickets cost $15, with a portion of the proceeds going to Respect Your Elders, a non-profit organization that feeds older people in minority communities.
ENJOY SEAFOOD
If summer and seafood are synonymous for you, we have good news: this Saturday, May 28th, the Long Beach Seafood Festival will once again take place in downtown Long Beach. The event, which runs from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm, will feature dozens of different food and drink vendors, live bands and DJs, cooking demonstrations, games, beer gardens, and even a mechanical bull named Jorge. General admission for adults is $21 and children under 12 are $8.
DANCING ALL DAY
DTLA resident, superb beer garden and live music venue in the arts district, hosts an all-day dance/barbecue party called The Carters on Saturday, May 28th. The 21+ event runs from 1pm to 7pm and includes everything you want from Beyonce and Jay-Z plus delicious grilled meats from the beer garden. Tickets cost 15 dollars.
SHAKE THE CARNIVAL
What is summer without a little nausea at a street carnival? Go get some medicine this weekend at Fiesta Hermosa. The South Bay Massive Event will take place from Saturday, May 28th to Monday, May 30th and will feature three different live music stages, over 250 street vendors, a standalone art and food fair and, of course, many carnival rides. Entrance to the event is free.

OUT ON THE PATIO
When all else fails, going outside with friends and having a strong drink is a great way to celebrate summer. Check out one of the city’s many great new patios, relax on the rooftop, or revisit one of LA’s many iconic outdoor dining spots.
GO TO THE CIRCUS
ok not that one valid the circus is still weird. This secret Rocky Horror themed queer circus features a variety of performers including burlesque, pole, drag, fire and magic, as well as DJs and other vendors. The event is held on Friday, May 27 from 21:00 to 2:00 at DTLA and you must be over 21 years of age to participate. Advance sale tickets are $15 and $20 at the door.
DINNER AND SHOW
Casita Del Campo in Silver Lake is one of the most important queer spaces in Los Angeles. And while an evening of margaritas and sizzling enchiladas on the upstairs patio is an essential way to ring in the summer, no night is complete without watching the show below. This weekend, 30 Minute Musicals presents their original Top Gun: The Musical, featuring both original music and hits from the 80s blockbuster. Tickets cost 20 dollars.
