From pasta and pizza to aragostin and arancini, Dundee’s Italian offering is unlike anything else, and for many restaurant owners, the food they serve is a tribute to their home.
With so many options available, you’ll be spoiled for choice, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll never have too much Italian food in your life.
Some of the businesses I have selected are generational, while others are new to the Silver City culinary scene.
Below is a list of the top seven places I would recommend visiting if you live in Dundee or plan to visit the city, with options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and even snacks.
Located on Perth Road, Don Michele is an authentic Italian restaurant serving pizza, pasta and a mix of classic Italian starters including arancini, bruschetta and antipasto.
With a cozy atmosphere, the team makes it easy to make you feel at home, and food is available for sit-downs and takeaways for those who prefer to enjoy eating at home.
I would recommend the linguine al pesto pasta dish containing linguini with cherry tomatoes, garlic, homemade arugula and basil pesto. You can’t go wrong with this.
Address: 177-179 Perth Road, Dundee DD2 1AS.
If you’re looking for more fine Italian cuisine then Piccolo, also on Perth Road, is the perfect place.
Piccolo has been proud to offer authentic Italian cuisine since 2007, showcasing its take on Italian cuisine with a twist.
The restaurant is designed for only 30 people. It has a gloomy and secluded atmosphere and is the perfect place for a romantic dinner or dinner with friends.
Address: 210 Perth Road, Dundee DD1 4JY.
If you are from Dundee, you will surely know about Mezzaluna and their range of Italian delicacies offered in their shop on Whitehall Crescent.
In addition to Italian stuffed sandwiches, takeaways also include arancini, aragostin, fresh coffee and cannoli.
Mezzaluna is a convenient, central place to stop for lunch or a quick bite if you’re in the city center and it’s a place I highly recommend trying.
Address: 19 Whitehall Crescent, Dundee DD1 4BB.
The family-run Bellini diner offers a varied menu of freshly prepared dishes including steaks, pasta, fish and pizza to suit all tastes.
Whether you are looking for a dinner for two or a family dinner, you can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine served fresh.
Bellini also has a pre-theater menu, as well as a la carte and takeaway menus.
Address: 36 Commercial Street, Dundee DD1 3EJ.
The ultimate Italian experience on the other side of town has to be Visocchis on Gray Street at Broughty Ferry.
Run by owner Marco Kaira along with his brother Roberto and their mother Antonia, the cafe has an ice cream and takeaway dessert section on one side and a restaurant for dinner on the other.
Their ice cream flavors change daily, Visocchis is a local favorite to visit, and they also serve some of the best bombilini (mini Italian donuts) in town.
Address: 40 Gray Street, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, DD5 2BJ.
If you want authentic Italian pizza, look no further.
Luigi’s Pizzeria on Strathmartin Road is a takeaway-only place where you can sample vegetarian, meat, spicy and vegan pizzas.
They can be purchased as 10″ or 12″ pizzas, but due to their popularity, you’ll need to make reservations in advance to sample their food.
Address: 21 Strathmartine Road, Dundee DD3 7RL.
Last but not least, Café Sicilia on Perth Road serves a variety of dishes inspired by authentic Sicilian cuisine.
The cafe, run by Teresa Russo and Bernadette Finnigan, serves food including pizza, pasta, sandwiches, arancini and risotto.
The cafe has a good mix of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free alternatives for customers.
The owners of Cafe Sicilia recently announced their plans to sell their cafe, so be sure to try it before it closes.
