A North London pizzeria that pairs pizza with Indian flavors has been named the UK’s “Best Takeaway Pizza”.

London is home to a lot of takeaway food, which is why it can sometimes be so hard to choose which one you’re going to eat on a Friday night after a long week. It can be such a challenging job that even food delivery service JustEat has done research to find out each of the country’s favorite cuisines.

Takeaway food was also the focus of a recent BBC Two competition that featured some of the best takeaway places in the UK, including some serious pizzerias. Fighting for victory in the program, the London company East West managed to take the crown from its competitors.

But it’s not just a pizzeria restaurant, East West specializes in pairing the flavors of India with the magic of carbi, Italian goodness – think curry toppings. East West is the brainchild of owner Devinder Singh, who combined his love of the Italian language with the flavors of his heritage from Punjab, India. However, things haven’t always been smooth sailing for East and West, with the pizzeria opening back in 2020, just three weeks before the Covid-19 lockdown began.

Their pizza is distinguished by the taste of India.

On the menu, customers will find no less than 15 different Neapolitan pizzas, including Makhni Paneer (with cream sauce, paneer, red onion, fried peppers and green pesto), CTM (Tikka sauce, mozzarella, tandoori chicken, fried peppers and crispy onions), and The OG with cream sauce base, mozzarella, tandoori chicken, portobello mushrooms and red pesto.

But the mix of flavors didn’t end there. Find the likes of butter chicken, spinach paneer, and arancini masala lobster; Masala fries, masala garlic bread, and a whole bunch of “dipper crunches” like coriander and parsley mayonnaise, jalapeno pesto, and Naga so Hot.

Would you like arancini with chicken in oil?

Among the pizzas that won them the takeaway crown were CTM, Bonkers! (with tomato sauce base, spicy salami, chili ‘nduja and scotch bonnet) and their Hara Bhara (with spinach sauce base, mozzarella, paneer, artichokes, crispy onions and red pesto).

East West celebrated their win at home by watching their edition of Britain’s Top Takeaways together. They announced their success on their Instagram account, writing: “WINNER: BEST PIZZA IN BRITAIN. Last night we were named #BritainsTopTakeaways #BritainsTopTakeaways for Best Takeaway Pizza. Swipe to see how our staff reacted to winning!

“Even though the program was filmed some time ago, it was just as amazing (and unreal!) to experience this incredible experience.

“Honestly, there is no better feeling than seeing people raving about our food. We put a lot of love into what we do, so everything is worth it.

“Opening this restaurant right before the pandemic meant a few difficult years for us, but our loyal customers kept us busy and we are immensely grateful for all the love we received.

“Thank you to everyone who has ordered pizza from us over the past two years. And if you’re here because you’ve seen us on TV, we’d love to see you at our Tufnell Park restaurant.”

Speaking to the Islington Tribune about their experience on the show, Devinder said, “It was very surreal. We watched it upstairs with people and my phone buzzed all night.

“Obviously we knew the result from last year, so we were very pleased. It was an amazing experience and it was very easy for us when we were there. We had producers if needed.”
