Cheap Food: Lula B’s

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Metro restaurant is celebrating its one year anniversary next month. Lula B’s is said to be a breakfast, brunch, and bar spot in downtown Omaha.

It is located near 9th Street and Dodge Street in the Capitol District. 3 News Now Host Cereze Cole tested it out on Cheap Eats this week.

There’s something surprisingly appetizing about a good brunch.

“It’s a special time of the day to get together. It’s not cocktails or happy hour or anything. It’s brunch. You can have mimosa or coffee. You can have both. You can eat sandwich, or pancakes, or both, if you like it,” said CEO Alyssa Roach.

That’s exactly what Roach says they’re into with Lula B’s.

Whether you dine inside and sip Stories coffee or bask in the sun on the spacious patio, the atmosphere is fun and unique.

“We have a cool working atmosphere during the week, and on the weekends it’s a brunch party—brunch party central,” Roach laughed.

But Roach says it’s the food that makes the place stand out.

“Lula B’s is basically a breakfast and brunch place with a Mexican twist,” she explained.

Arlette Becerra took Cerese to Lula B’s kitchen to see her Mexican flair up close.

Her family is part owner of this place.

All of their recipes come from Mexico and have been passed down from generation to generation.

“My mom and my aunts brought this to this kitchen and they brought their flavors and flavors from their home country in central Mexico and that’s what makes this food so delicious,” Becerra shared.

This is a family business. Chef Satu works alongside his son. Together they prepare the best dishes of Lula’s B’s here.

Meggzikan omelet is the most popular.

“It’s stuffed with chorizo and birriya meat. It’s then seasoned with spicy gauk sauce and is to die for,” Roach described.

They also make a hefty cheese burrito.

It’s loaded with meat of your choice. Roach recommends carne asada. It also comes with Mexican rice, fried beans, cheese and pico de gallo.

The generous spread of their homemade queso makes it complete.

If you’re craving something sweet, you’ll also love Strawberry French Toast.

“This is also my mother’s recipe,” Becerra said proudly.

Homemade dough is key. You can smell the nutmeg and cinnamon, but this family recipe stays in the family.

“I can’t reveal her secret now, can I?” Becerra asked with a smile.

The end product is a beautiful culinary creation, complete with a pinch of powdered sugar.

Breakfast, brunch and more in one of the city’s hottest areas.

“It was exciting. We’re a bit off the beaten path, but I think we’re attractive enough that people… oh what a place this is,” Roach said.

Lula B’s is open every day. It’s next to 9th and Dodge. Here are the prices for the dishes we shared in stories:

Strawberry French toast: $12.79

Cheese burrito: $13.59

Meggzikan Omelette: $14.29
