Velenosi Prope Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2019

(3 stars)

I used to find Montepulciano d’Abruzzo a nice and cheaper alternative to Chianti. Some of the ones I’ve tried recently have impressed with their depth of flavor, savory texture and energy that makes me want to explore them further. This fine wine should pair well with all sorts of dishes, but wild mushrooms come to mind first. Velenosi also makes an outstanding trebbiano, also called Prope, for white wine lovers. Alcohol by volume: 14 percent. BW: 415 grams (lightweight).

Imported and distributed by Baron François: Available locally at Chat’s Liquors, Rodman’s, U Street Wine & Beer, Wardman Wines. Available in Maryland at Beers & Cheers in Germantown; Sal’s Italian cuisine at John’s Cabin. Available in Virginia at Arrowine and Cheese stores in Arlington.

Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

(2.5 stars)

Hess Select has long been a line of delicious and affordable cabernet sauvignon and chardonnays that I always look for in a restaurant list when asked to pick a wine for a crowd. This booth showcases aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and cherry varieties, but no flavor, like it was made from a recipe. Fortress: 13.5%. Bottle weight: 580 grams (medium).

Distributed by Breakthru Beverages: Widely available.
